Self confessed ‘nerd’ Phil turned his passion for web design into a successful business start-up, thanks to his programme at Gateshead College.
After working for years in a contact centre, Phil wanted to pursue a career in something he really loved and decided to follow his interest for web design by enrolling on an HND in Computing at Gateshead College.
He said: “I’d always been a bit of a nerd when it came to building websites and I knew web design and build was a growing industry. I saw an opportunity to change my career path and do something I was passionate about.
“I’d previously been to Gateshead College when I was younger, I had a great experience at the time so it made sense for me to go back and study at a college I had confidence in.”
Phil studied his HND around work and family commitments and was impressed with how flexible the college was to his needs.
“The lecturers were really understanding and supportive, they realised I had other commitments outside of the programme and did their best to accommodate me.
I found the programme was really flexible for me and I managed to juggle studying with looking after my two children.”
One of Phil’s projects was to create a commercial website for local firm Sullivan Roofing Company. Phil built the customised site using a mix of software and HTML, he then presented the project to his client.
John Sullivan owner of Sullivan Roofing said: “I was really impressed with Phil’s work, his whole attitude to the project was extremely professional and I’ve ended up with a really great looking site that shows what services we can offer our customers.”
Phil has now set up Noiseworks, a creative digital strategy company and is enjoying working for a varied client base and applying his new skills.
“The business is doing really well and I’m enjoying the challenge of working for myself. My programme really helped me not only with the programming side of things and learning how to use new software, but it also taught me other valuable skills such as how to market my business, which has been a real help when setting up on my own.”
