YOUTUBE

Why not show the world what you can do?

What is YouTube?

When YouTube was launched in 2005 it's initial purpose was to let people to post their own original created video content online, but in the past decade it has grown further. The platform now sees billions of people worldwide sharing, connecting and inspiring each other.

Lots of people now use YouTube to promote themselves which can then lead to being super successful. Showcasing talent is becoming the norm on YouTube - remember that Justin Bieber dude?

300 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute.

To get things started you need to find out what your goal is, what videos you want to make and who you are trying to reach out to. Knowing who your audience is before creating your channel is important when it comes to keeping your content relevant. Make people interestest and they will want to share, bookmark and even subscribe to your channel (psst... subscriptions lead to money).

  • Creating your channel
  • Looking good
  • Making your videos
  • Playlist
  • Get involved with your viewers

Before you head over to YouTube to create your channel you need a Google account. This won't take long and some of you may even already have one.

Once you've got your Google account, you can head over to YouTube and set up your amazingly appropriate account (and channel).

When setting this up, you'll be asked to name your channel. If it’s a business venture you should use the business name but if not, use something unique and memorable. This will be the name you use when promoting your videos so 'Number 1 YouTube God' probably isn't a good one to go for.

After you have a name, you’ll be asked a couple of questions, have to tick a few boxes and then you'll be redirected to your new channel - hooray!

Before you start promoting your page you need to make sure everything looks just right.

Firstly, be sure the icon you use is a quality image that relates to your channel. If you are using your business name, the best thing to do is to use your company logo. The icon and art are a great way to make your channel look distinctive and stand out from the rest but don't forget who your audience is! To get you started, YouTube have very kindly provided some top tips on channel art.

The about section is equally important and gives you a chance to tell people who you are and what you do. This is also a great place to drop in your other social networking links so people can follow you on a few platforms.

Now to the fun bit... Actually making your videos! Start filming, editing your videos, adding in some title pages, pop your personalized channel icon into the videos and hopefully the result is something your viewers will remember.

Always make sure to upload and update your channel often and regularly. Having a plan in place helps keep things steady and lets your viewers get into a habit of checking your channel on a certain day or time.

When uploading your videos you need to make sure that you use good tags. Good tags are unique but need to be accurate and popular. Remember, there is a ridiculously large amount of videos available on YouTube and you don't want yours to get lost!

Grouping your videos together into a playlist can help keep your channel tidy. They can also help you rank higher in Google search and encourage people to watch more of your videos.

There is also an auto-play function for playlists which are a brilliant way for your videos to play on a reel. You just need to make sure you group your videos together appropriately - viewers who are watching your body building techniques probably won't want to then watch your hair braiding tutorial!

Social media is a two-way thing. You need to engage with your audience and let them know that you're there. Responding to questions and comments can create useful conversations and also allow for valuable networking to take place - don't go arguing with haters, though!

YouTube is the 3rd most visited website in the world.

How can you get involved?

  • 1Promote yourself

YouTube is worldwide and the reach you can get on your videos is phenomenal. If you want people across the globe to see your stuff, YouTube is a pretty good place to start. Don't forget - once you have made your video it is important to get it seen; spread the word (or the link)!

  • 2Showcase your talent

Whether you can sing, dance or juggle cats - there is people in the world that want to see it. Get filming, and be brave!

  • 3Tutorials

Tutorials are massively popular on YouTube. If you know how to do something, share it with everybody else. If you once wanted to know, there must be other people that want to know, right? You could show absolutely anything. From showing the world how to face paint to the best way to complete a level on the latest Xbox game, people want to know!

  • 4Online competitions

YouTubers run competitions where you can enter with a video response. There are some weird and wonderful ones on there, why not get involved?

Or why not run your own contest? YouTube contest policies are available.

  • 5Be creative

You can do anything you want to do, think of something that no one else has. It could be the start of something...
